The Area
Torrevieja is surrounded by two beautiful and large natural saltwater lagoons, which form the well known "Salt works of Torrevieja".
Torrevieja can be considered an island due to three canals which separate the city from the mainland. One of them is called the Salt-mines Canal which is located at the entrance of La Mata. The second canal is called the Acequion Canal which runs through the Acequion beach to the Torrevieja lagoon. The third one lies north of the city and connects the two lagoons.
The salt works of Torrevieja are considered the biggest in Europe and the second biggest in the world after the Dead sea in Israel. The salt comes from the filtration of seawater in the lagoon, the water crystallises as it evaporates. The salt has a characteristic pink colour due to a micro organism similar to plankton called Artemia salina.
To extract the salt from the lagoon the salt workers use wooden boats placed one after the other forming what is called a "train".To extract the salt from the harbour the salt workers use a 2 kilometre long transportation band. In the old times they didn't use this system, they used to transport the salt by carts and by small trains up to Las Eras de la Sal, the old salt warehouses.
At the bottom of the lagoon there are 8,000,000 tons of salt. The salt is exported to northern Europe, Iceland, Canada, United States and Western Africa. It is used as a dressing, for salting meat and fish and in industries as a water softener.
It is also used to help northern countries with their icy roads and airport runways. In African countries the salt is used as a fridge, to conserve and keep food and also to stop it from dehydrating.
Due to the salt works the handicraft of Torrevieja is also based on salt. Since long ago people from Torrevieja have built salt boats. They build the structure with wooden sticks and cover them with a cotton cloth. After this the boats are place in the salt lagoon for 24 hours.
After this period the boats are taken out and cleaned. The next step consists of placing the boat back into the lagoon for three days. The salt has then crystallised completely and the boats are covered with a white and shiny finish.
A little further away are the coastal towns of Santa Pola , Guardamar, San Pedro, La Mata, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Horadada, Punta Prima and Gran Alacant.
All are within easy reach, and affordable Spanish holiday and retirement homes have sprung up in all these areas
