Elche - Costa Blanca

Set in the heart of the Costa Blanca, is the city of Elche or 'Elx' as it's known in Valencian. It is just 20 km from Alicante, and is surrounded by palm trees, of which there are more than 200,000 that cover a surface of 430 hectares. Elche has the largest palm grove in Europe and declared to be a World Heritage Site.

It was originally created by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC, who took advantage of a warm climate and an ingenious irrigation system.

Its mild Mediterranean climate enjoying fresh sea breezes, and its valuable cultural and ecological heritage, fiestas, popular traditions, broad avenues and modern services, all form part of the principal attractions of the city.

Laying close to the Mediterranean coast, Elche is one of the most visited cities in the Costa Blanca. Near the town centre there are miles of beach, where sand dunes meet pine trees along a most scenic Mediterranean coastline.

The northern stretch has the broadest dunes, on the beaches of L'Altet and La Senieta, which run south to Els Arenals del Sol, a tourist resort area equipped with an excellent range of services.

Surrounding the city are a total of thirty rural districts dotted with farmhouses and bungalows. This is mainly an agricultural area named El Camp d'Elx, where pomegranates, figs, dates, citrus, fruits, almonds, cotton, and a variety of vegetables are grown.

Car Hire Elche

There are several car hire companies in Elche, but if you are arriving at Alicante it may be more convenient to hire a car there.

Argus car hire, Record Rent a Car, Hertz, Sol-Mar, Avis General, Europa, Europcar are all there. You can choose to leave to rent a car until you arrive, but you do take the chance of either not getting the car of your choice or facing long queues particularly in the summer season.
