The delightful and historical port town of Ayamonte on the Costa de la Luz is the last frontier before the Portuguese border. Set on a hillside with magnificent views overlooking the estuary of the Guadiana River that divides the two countries, and is surrounded by scenery of rolling green hills.
The town of Ayamonte dates back to the 15th century exampled by the churches of El Salvador and San Francisco which provide impressive architectural heritage.
Ayamonte is a great place to discover typical Spanish life; the centre is a hub of atmosphere which is captured in the main square and the narrow cobbled streets full of restaurants and cafes. There are many bars, shops and boutiques, and the town is lively all year round.
The town benefits from a picturesque marina which is lined with palm trees, and a port where you can catch the ferry to Villa Real, the Portuguese town on the opposite shore. The popular beach resort of Isla Canela is only a 5 minute drive and offers long stretches of fine golden sand.
The combination of the scenery, history, traditional Spanish atmosphere with the beach close by make Ayamonte an idyllic destination.
Additionally the motorway is only a short drive away, linking all the other towns and amenities in the region, and providing incredibly easy access to Portugal via the motorway bridge.
The infinite beaches of the Costa de la Luz, lined by pine groves, form an arch from Ayamonte to Tarifa, from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the Strait of Gibraltar.
